RoboCup 2022 – DRZ edition

The RoboCup German Open: Rescue League will be part of the Rescue Robotics Days.

The RoboCup German Open has developed starting with the first event in 2001 to a well-established and attractive open competition for international RoboCup Major League teams with a strong European focus. Usually, the Rescue Robot League was organized as part of the RoboCup German Open.

In 2021, due to the pandemic situation, a common RoboCup German Open with all leagues combined could not be organized. Therefore, the RoboCup German Open Rescue Robot League was held separately from 27-30 September 2021 in Dortmund at the Competence Center for Rescue Robotics (DRZ). Six teams from three nations faced the challenges in the disciplines Mobility, Maneuvering and Dexterity. In addition to the four experienced teams Hector, AutnonOHM, Dynamics (Austria) and Francor, two newcomers also took part: Team Siemens Space Agency and Team Club Capra (Canada).

Due to the very good working and competition conditions for the participating teams, the chairs of RoboCup have decided to hold the next competition of the RoboCup German Open Rescue Robot League in 2022 also the DRZ in Dortmund.

Under this heading we share the stories of the day and report on current placings and actions.

Monday, May 09

The teams have arrived safely and are starting to set up the robots. The lanes are inspected, the robots are set up and adjusted. All teams are busy working for the heats tomorrow. The order of the races will be decided today. After that, the teams will get down to the fine-tuning work. Start of the heats tomorrow at 9 am.

Thuesday, May 10

The heats for the competition started punctually at 9 am. Some teams still had to overcome small technical challenges. The change to a new software architecture and the radio connection to the robots caused problems from time to time. All teams worked hard on the performance of the robots.

In total, there are 4 categories in which the robots have to prove their skills. Mobility, Dexterity, Manipulation and Exploration. In addition to the basic navigability of the systems, there are special tests from the areas of extended mobility (e.g. climbing stairs), dexterity in handling the gripper arm and in automated exploration of the environment.

10 different exercises from these areas were on the agenda and the teams could decide for themselves when to tackle which course. Specifically, this involves climbing stairs, opening doors, mapping buildings and detecting objects such as danger signs.

Today was the first of two preliminary heats. Tomorrow will decide who will move on to the finals.

Like last year, a television team will again accompany us at the competition. The film crew from RTL West was very impressed by the dedicated teams, their robotic systems and above all the idea behind RoboCup Rescue – namely to research robotic systems and test them in competitions in order to further develop rescue robotics.

Wednesday, May 11

Today marks the end of the preliminary rounds. Today, the teams went full speed ahead with the last challenges to collect points. For the robots, the focus today was on demanding tasks such as navigating a staircase blocked by beams and driving through sand and gravel tracks. There were several technical defects due to the heavy strain on the robots, which had to be quickly repaired during the breaks.
As an additional difficulty in the upcomming final, only a limited radio connection will be available. For this purpose, the bandwidth will be artificially limited and an additional latency will be added to the data transmission. As in the previous year, TU Dortmund University is providing support with its technical expertise.

Description for the final
The robots have to start from the DRZ emergency vehicle. The operator station has to be set up inside the DRZ vehicle. When the robot enters the building mock-up, the network connection will be degradated. The following sequence of tasks has to be performed by the robot:

  • Door opening
  • Navigation through heavy smoke
  • Debris traversal over bricks
  • Valve closing (2 valves, 5 points per valve, min. rotation by 90°)
  • Thermal investigation of containers
  • Sealing of an open 20 l DIN 61 container with a cone
  • Detect at least 4 hazmat signs automatically and provide a map with the location of the signs
  • Debris traversal over bricks
  • Navigation through heavy smoke
  • Door opening

If a robot reached the last room and returned to the DRZ emergency vehicle, it is eligible to repeat the mission for more points.

The finalists started the decisive last challenge with excitement. The teams competed in reverse order of their ranking from the preliminary heats. A special challenge for the operators this year was the room with dense fog and an artificially introduced delay in the radio signal propagation time. Team Francor impressed in the challenge with their manoeuvrability skills. When closing the two valves, the Austrian team Dynamics demonstrated impressive dexterity. Team Hector manoeuvred their robot unerringly through the dense fog. Exciting scenes were delivered by the favoured team AutonOHM, which caused the robot to tip over in the dense fog. Thanks to the quick repair of the well-rehearsed team, the robot was able to continue its mission a short time later. In the end, two teams shared the victory. With almost the same number of points, Team AutonOHM and Team Hector joint the first place.

The building replica of the operation site suffered a few bruises in the end. The challenges in the specially developed DRZ Challenge showed how important testing in realistic scenarios is for the further development of robotic systems.
The organisers experienced enthusiastic and motivated teams. The further development of the arenas and the requirements for the teams are increasingly bringing the tests for the robots closer to real-life conditions. This keeps RoboCup Rescue exciting and attracts more teams to participate. This year, there were already two groups of visitors from Austria and Switzerland who expressed great interest in participating next year with their own development.

Tuesday, May 10  Competition (Standard test methods)
First day of the competition. The teams compete in various standardized test suits to demonstrate their capabilities in the fields of maneuvering, mobility, dexterity, and exploration.

Second day of the competition. The teams compete in various standardized test suits to demonstrate their capabilities in the fields of maneuvering, mobility, dexterity, and exploration.

Thursday, May 12 – Final runs (“DRZ Challenge”), application workshop with first responders, and award ceremony.
Final day of the competition. The teams compete in an application-oriented mission simulating a realistic accident in a chemical laboratory where traditional first responders would be at a high risk. The mission requires the teams to perform multiple, versatile tasks such as opening a door, traversing debris, navigating through smoke, and finally identifying a critical, heated container as well as sealing it.
